House of Tools and Labour Thought

12,000 hand tools from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Because the aim of the Maison is not to "conserve", but to use the past to understand the present and build the future.

The Maison de l'Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière was founded by Paul Feller s.j., an avant-garde Jesuit priest, and is a place of transmission dedicated to learning.

_THE MUSEUM

A resource centre, open to the public, with 32,000 old and contemporary works, is now the second largest technical library in France, the museum section includes 12,000 tools in 65 remarkably staged display cases. There is no doubt that a priceless intangible work of art lies hidden here, just waiting to be interpreted by all visitors attentive to its message.

The question is not "what's it for?" but "who's it for?".

Housed in one of the most beautiful buildings in Troyes town centre, the Hôtel Mauroy, the Maison de l'Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière (House of Tools and Labour Thought) offers a genuine overview of the trades requiring the use of the hand.

Looking to the future and recently modernised, the House continues to transcend every visitor who walks through its doors.

The history of the Hôtel Mauroy dates back to 1409. The first known owner, Pierre des Marest, owned the "Hôtel de l'Aigle", the original name of the Hôtel Mauroy.

Paul Feller has collected a collection of hand tools that reveal the "workers' spirit".
